Chapter Six

Katherine lay face down on the bed. Brody was gently running his hands up and down her back, and when he saw her eyes open, he leaned in to steal a kiss. It had been a week, and the two had spent every moment together.

“Mmmm… I could lie here all day with you.” She smiled sleepily.

“You’re in Australia. You need to be out enjoying it,” he whispered in her ear, and a chill ran down her spine.

Suddenly, Katherine’s cell rang. The sound surprised her, and she jumped up to get it. Looking at the number, she saw that it was Zoe. Katherine held up a finger to Brody, and he nodded and left the room to give her some privacy.

“Hello?” Katherine said into the phone.

“WTF, Fat Kat! You’ve been gone over a week, and you don’t think to call your best friend, not even once? I’ve been pacing the floor for days wondering if you were okay or if maybe some serial killer had decided to make you his next Meals on Wheels!” Zoe rambled on and on.

“Zoe! I’m fine. I swear.” And only after she had heard the sigh on the other end of the line did she continue in a more subtle tone, “I’m sorry I haven’t called. I’ve just had so much going on here, I couldn’t…”

That was Zoe’s cue. She stopped Katherine in mid-sentence. “Oh, my God! You’ve had sex with someone. You little hooker! I want details, now.”

Katherine’s mouth dropped, and she wondered to herself why she was even surprised by this. If anyone knew her, it was Zoe. But with Brody in the other room, there was no way Katherine could talk about this without him hearing. “Um… I can’t talk about this right now. I will have to call you later.”

“Oh, my God. He’s right there in the room, isn’t he? You’d better tell me now!”

Katherine rolled her eyes in frustration. “Zoe, I can’t. Please. I’ll call you later.”

“Well, I’m not getting off the phone until you repeat after me… ‘Fat Kat’s got it back’,” Zoe chanted through the phone.

“No,” Katherine argued.

“Not hanging up until you say it.” Now Zoe was singing the words through the phone.

“Fine,” Katherine said through clenched teeth. “Fat Kat’s got it back.”

“Louder!” Zoe shouted. Katherine knew her best friend. Zoe was more stubborn than a mud-covered splinter.

“Fat Kat’s got it back! You happy? Now, bye!” Katherine said as she hit the end button. Zoe’s laugh finally cut out with the words ‘End call’ popping up on the screen.

“Fat cat?” Brody said as he walked in the room.

“Yeah, she always calls me that…” Katherine suddenly realized what she had just said.

“That’s odd. Why fat cat?” Brody asked.

“Oh, um, it’s my best friend Zoe. There is no reasoning behind what she does. I just ignore her most of the time,” Katherine answered. “Okay, so what is on the agenda today?” she asked.

“Surfing,” Brody replied. “You have to surf if you’re staying in Oz,” he added with a wink.
